As exciting as new technology and gadgets can be, sometimes they just don't pan out the way they should. The latest failure of the future to materialize has been the Desktop Factory, a printer that could have printed 3D objects to a template by layering powdered ink over itself, using inkjet technology.
The Desktop Factory was not the first or only development in the 3D arena, but its failure may demonstrate the impractical nature of having a factory in a home. Some things are better outsourced, I wouldn't print a book at home, and I am not confident I could save money by recreating a manufacturing environment with my office printer either.
Then again, some gadgets are for fun alone, and I would not be sorry to see a toy factory like the Desktop Factory become available.
The futuristic printer has a large tray area to deliver your printed out object, which is an inner box with blue tinted plastic face that is distinctly reminiscent of a Star Trek replicator. Visit desktopfactory.com to find out more and view the photos of this possible future product.
