Reviewed earlier this month by PC World, the Canon
PIXMA MP490 Printer
is the least expensive of Canon's latest models. This 3-in-1 (print, scan,
copy) is both PC and Mac compatible and can connect to your PC via USB cable.
The MP 490 is does not have an extremely large footprint, measuring 6.1"
x 17.5" x 13.1" (H x W x D), and it weighs only 13lbs., so it's easy to
pick up and move. It offers users a maximum print resolution of 4800 x 1200
dpi.
There are some nice features worth noting on the Canon
PIXMA MP490 Printer
. First, it has a pop-up section of the lid that when lifted exposes a 1.8"
color LCD screen and control panel for photo editing amongst other functions.
Also, hidden from view (but protected) behind a small door on the front
of the printer are three media card slots to print photos without using
your PC. The single input tray has a maximum capacity of 100 sheets and
there is no ADF. In terms of ink, the machine utilizes a "traditional" two-cartridge
system, a pigment-based black cartridge (PG-210), and then a tri-color cartridge
(CLI-221).
Both offer high yield options for a bit more money (XLs), but it is nice
that standard sized cartridges (as opposed to "starter" cartridges) ship
in the box. According to the PC World review, the Canon
PIXMA MP490 Printer
utilizes separate ink cartridges for the colors, but that does not match
up to Canon's product website. Overall, this a very nice printer for a home
or a college-bound student considering the price and the features. It lacks
most of the features and power a small business would need to make its purchase
worthwhile.
