The Canon PIXMA MP980
is a very functional device that offers a reasonable amount of useful features for the amateur photographer or home printer. It will print, scan, fax, or copy at a maximum resolution of 4800 x 9600 dpi in full color. The MP980
is not as large as some of it's competition at 7.9 " x 18.5" x 15.2" (HxWxD), but it is rather heavy (24 lbs.), which does not lend itself to moving around your home or office.
This Pixma model comes with a large 3.5" LCD screen that photographers will enjoy. It also offers two separate paper trays that will hold up to 150 sheets each which allows the user to reserve one tray exclusively for normal print jobs, and the other tray for photo printing. The Pixma 980 is not as fast as its competition in terms of pages-per-minute, only printing a max of 24 pages per minute for black and white jobs, or 19 pages per minute for color jobs. One unique feature of this Canon machine is a gray cartridge designed to enhance monochrome photos. It also offers 5 additional cartridges.
All of the ink is from the ChromaLife 100 series, and each cartridge is a CLI-221 for their respective colors. The Pixma also offers a PictBridge connection as well as a full media card reader for direct connections to your digital camera. Both PC and Mac compatible, the MP980 can be connected to your computer via a USB cable, a wired Ethernet connection, or a wireless connection. The print quality of the Pixma 980 is a little suspect, suffering from jagged edges (black and white jobs) or blotchy marks in the letters themselves (color jobs). Overall, the Canon Pixma 980 is a reasonable, but not stellar device that offers a multitude of features, but other similar printers have even more features for the same amount of money.
