Previously mentioned on the Castle Ink site, and reviewed earlier this month by Computer Shopper, the Canon PIXMA MP990 Printer
is the latest offering from Canon in its Pixma line. It is a 3-in-1 model offering users the ability to print, copy, and scan at a maximum resolution of 9600 x 2400 dpi. It is an average size machine measuring 7.9" x 15.2" x 18.5" (H x W x D), and weighing almost 24 lbs. The MP 990 features two 150-sheet capacity trays, one in the front and one in rear, however the rear tray is primarily designed to hold media like photo paper. It offers users the convenience of an automatic duplexer, so you can save paper by printing on both sides. In terms of ink, the MP 990 utilizes a six-cartridge system, including black (Canon 220), photo black, photo gray, cyan, magenta, and yellow (all colors are Canon 221s).
The Canon PIXMA MP990 Printer
also features a large 3.8" LCD screen where you can preview your photos, edit your photos, and select the number of prints, all without your PC. You can connect it to your PC or Mac via a Wi-Fi connection, Ethernet, or USB port. It also supports a variety of memory card media (SD, Compact Flash, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick Duo, xD and more) and offers a PictBridge port. The slots for memory cards are behind a door which helps protect them from dust and debris.
The print quality and speed are both rated to be above average as well compared to similar machines from other manufacturers. One minor detriment is the lack of a ADF which can be found on other printers in this price range. Overall, this is a very good printer for anyone from the home user to the small business.
