New York, NY -- Reviewed in late 2009 by PC World, the Dell 2230d monochrome laser printer is certainly an
affordable choice for small businesses owners and home offices. The speed of printing claimed by Dell was
tested by the PC World reviewer was closer than is usually found. Dell has the speed listed at a maximum of 35
ppm, the tested speed was about 33.9 ppm. That speed puts it above other monochrome laser printers tested by
PC World.
The 2230d measures 10.2" x 15.98" x 14.55" (H x W x D) and weights about 30 lbs. It prints at a maximum
resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi. The text quality was above average, but the graphics are reported to be lower
quality. For what it’s worth, on Dell’s site, the personal reviews of the printer from business owners spoke
highly of the graphics. The 2230d does not offer Ethernet connectivity, but it does have the ability to
connect to your PC or Mac wirelessly or via USB cable. Another perk for a printer at this price point is the
automatic duplexer for 2-sided printing.
The paper tray can hold up to 250 sheets of paper, and for an extra $100, you can double the paper
capacity with an additional 250 sheet tray. The 2230d can handle a variety of other media with a flip out tray
for printing like envelopes or cardstock that are ejected in the rear of the machine. One major detriment
noted by PC World was the control panel. The buttons are marked with icons instead of text, and one will need
to consult the instruction manual to translate.
We have reported before at Castle Ink about tradeoffs when you buy an inexpensive printer. Unfortunately,
the Dell 2230d is no different. What you saved in up front costs is spent in replacing the toner cartridge.
Out of the box, the printer comes with a 1,000 page toner cartridge. The only replacement cartridge is good
for up to 3,500 pages and costs $111, or 3.2 cents per page. While that is the cheapest replacement among
monochrome lasers, there is no high-yield option for printing. Being a laser printer, it does have a high duty
cycle of 35,000 pages per month. Overall, this is certainly a very good option for a laser printer for the
price point for home offices or small businesses who are on a budget.
