New York, NY -- Reviewed by PC World in March 2010, the Officejet Pro 8000 Wireless printer offers home offices or small businesses the opportunity to get high quality of a laser printer without shelling out the money to buy one. As a general rule, reviewers tend to mention the ugly stuff like the high cost of the consumables towards the end of their pieces. In this particular case, as the authors note, the ink prices are so good they have to be mentioned up front. We can’t disagree— a 1,000 page black cartridge only runs $25.99 which makes the cost of each page just 2.6 cents and the three individual color cartridges only cost $19.99 and yield 900 pages which is only 2.2 cents per page. So when you add them all together a four-color page only will run 9.3 cents. If you go with the high-yield cartridges, the ink costs are even lower. Black prints run 1.96 cents and color prints cost 1.9 cents making the four-color page cost just 7.2 cents.
The Officejet Pro 8000 is a single-function inkjet and it measures a reasonable 7.09” x 19.5” x 18.86” (H x W x D) and weighs just over 17 lbs. It can be connected to your PC or Mac via USB cable (which is included in the box, for once), Ethernet, or wirelessly. It also fairly quick with maximum printing speeds of 35ppm and 34ppm for monochrome and color jobs, respectively.
In terms of paper handling, Pro 8000 comes standard with a 250-sheet input tray and 150-sheet output tray. If that is not enough, you can add an additional 250-sheet tray for only $80. The machine also comes with a built in automatic duplexer for two-sided print jobs.
For an inkjet machine in this price range, the overall print quality is almost unmatched. In fact, the quality could give lower-priced laser printers a run for their money. The reviewers noted that for grayscale graphics, the Pro 8000 was able to display “a level of detail in the darker areas that many printers miss.” Color printing was about average for an HP product.
Overall, this looks like another winner from HP both in price and also in functionality and features. Most home offices or small businesses who choose to add this machine should be very satisfied.
