Released in March of 2009 the HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless Printer
is a great bet for homes or home offices looking for a very capable 4-in-1 AIO device. It is lightning fast, especially distancing itself from its competition with text printing. The Pro 8500 will print a maximum of 35 pages per minute for black and white jobs and 34 pages per minute for color jobs. It is not a small printer, measuring 13.03" x 19.45" by 18.86" (H x W x D ).
One nice feature apparent right off the bat is the large 3.45" touch screen that gives you access to all the major machine functions and a graphical ink gauge. The Pro 8500 will scan at a maximum optical resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi and is big enough for larger documents (legal size 8.5 x 14"). You can connect it to your PC or Mac via a typical USB 2.0 connection, Ethernet, or wirelessly.
The Officejet Pro 8500
also comes with a variety of memory card slots (xD, Memory Stick, SD, and Compact Flash) and a PictBridge port for direct printing of photos. Two other nice feature of this device are the automatic document feeder and the autoduplexer. It should be noted that with the ADF, it is listed as a maximum capacity of 35 pages on the HP website, but the review on Cnet.com listed it as 50 pages. It has a built-in 250 page capacity paper tray and for an additional $80, you can buy a tray that fits under the machine that will hold an additional 250 pages.
In terms of ink, the Pro 8500 uses four separate cartridges, all HP 940s, for black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. The cartridges all have high-capacity (XL) equivalents as well. Overall, for the price and features, this machine will leave anyone happy from the industrious home user to the small business. Cnet.com gave this printer an editor's choice award for September 2009.
