New York, NY -- Reviewed by PC Magazine in June 2010, the E462dtn is part of Lexmark’s SMB laser printer lineup. It is somewhat sizable, measuring 13.7 by 16.0 by 14.6” (H x W x D) and weighs close to 40 lbs. For that reason, it is a good thing it is networkable so placement is more flexible. It is fairly fast as well; the printer is capable of churning out a maximum of 40 ppm. It is very close to Lexmark’s T650n in most features as well as price. It can be connected to your computer via USB or Ethernet.
This printer comes fully-loaded right from the start. It is somewhat unfortunate that the paper capacity is not expandable, but the standard configuration still gives you 550-sheet total capacity. It also includes a duplexer, so you can easily (and automatically) print on both sides of a piece of paper. It comes with 64MB of internal memory, but that is upgradeable to 576MB. It also has a maximum monthly duty cycle of 80,000 pages, and a recommended cycle of 1,500 to 10,000 pages.
It’s output is somewhat lackluster, but that alone does not discredit this printer. The text quality is better than the graphic quality. The graphic printing is probably sufficient for internal audiences. The photo quality, surprisingly enough, is above par according to the reviewer.
Some of the highest value in the E462dtn comes with its ink. At Castle Ink, we have yet to see a larger capacity cartridge than the extra high yield return program cartridge for this machine. It is rated for a whopping 18,000 pages, and runs $294.99 direct from Lexmark, which is equivalent to less than 1.5 cents per page.
Overall, this printer represents another solid effort on the part of Lexmark. SMBs and small- to medium-sized workgroups would benefit from acquiring it.
