Clarion, PA -- Clarion University is now part of a growing movement in colleges and universities across the U.S. who have re-examined their printing campus-wide and made changes to save money. According to a news release on their university website date December 4, 2009, they have begun by removing all personal printers from one building on campus, Carrier Hall (including the school president’s) in favor of centralized printers located on each floor.
When they began the analysis at the start of 2009, there were 540 print devices on campus which used $60,000 per year in cartridges alone. Further, Clarion spends $12-15,000 per year to purchase printers and an additional $4-5,000 per year to maintain the devices.
The director of their purchasing department is quick to point out that the idea was not theirs originally, but stemmed from a move made by Hewlett-Packard in 2008 to remove all non-networked printers from their headquarters. They will gradually be switching the rest of the buildings on campus to this model going forward.
