Color and Your Printer

Color is a very subjective principle - each person sees colors in their own individual way. Its application in technology, however, can affect the way everyone relates to their computers and printers. The color wheel, an instrumental tool in utilizing color, is based on the additive method of creating color. Starting with no color (black), this method mixes various combinations of the three primary colors together to create all others. This is the method used in creating colors on a computer monitor. Many people wonder why their printed pictures look different from those on their monitors. The answer is simple; printers use a different process in creating colors: the subtractive method. This process is known as subtractive because it begins with all colors (created by printing on white paper), and uses printed colors to subtract from the light of the white paper to make other colors visible to the naked eye. Using this method, printers require four colors of ink: cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK), which mix together to make all other colors visible on paper. The color savvy individual understands how best to utilize color in their printing needs.
