Gaining Access to a Network Printer

Date: February 22, 2010

New York, NY -- According to M. David Stone of PC Magazine, it is not uncommon for non-system administrators to find that they can not initially print to a network printer even if a system administrator on the same network can. There are multiple reasons why this could be happening, but there is one simple solution to check out. The first thing you need to check on is whether or not your printer installs a proprietary network port.

To do this in Windows XP, open the Printers and Faxes dialog box, in Vista, it is under the Printers dialog box. After getting to the appropriate box, then right-click on the printer, then select Properties, and then the Ports tab. If the Standard TCP/IP port is not selected, then changing to that may be all that needs to be done. Be sure to make note of any changes you make so they can be reset later if necessary.
