New York, NY -- According to an article which appeared on the PC World website May 18, HP announced another reason that they had wanted to acquire Palm, printers. The operating system which is contained in Palm products can be used with their own web-connected printers which currently allow people to print a variety of things straight from the web without a PC.
HP’s Chairman and CEO Mark Hurd announced the plan during their most recent quarterly earnings call. The acquisition of Palm is costing HP $1.2 billion.
Hurd also observed that many people were writing about the acquisition of Palm as a means for HP to get into smartphones. While this may be part of the motivation, it is far from the only reason.
While many in the business have commended HP for their choice, even before the deal was announced Palm was not holding its own in the battle with Apple’s iPhone, Research in Motion’s BlackBerrys, or Google’s Android OS. This acquisition then still leaves HP with plenty of work to do if the Palm shareholders approve it. Hurd hopes to have everything in place by the third quarter of 2010.
