New York, NY -- In recent news, a retired print industry veteran, Jim Forrest, had some comments on the state of the industry today, reports the Recycler.
The column first ran on 14 Dec. on industry analysis blog, Actionable Intelligence. Overall, Forrest felt that the old adage applied, “‘the more things change, the more they stay the same’”. Beginning work in 1969 and not retiring until 2008, Forrest has indeed seen a lot of change in the industry, even in recent times.
Throughout the time he was in the industry, he felt that both OEMs and the aftermarket had plentiful opportunity, and that the only difference that has come about is the “‘intensity of the competition’”. He also noted that MPS services have gained a lot of momentum over the past few years. This has led to more large companies acquiring smaller ones to do that, and also that aftermarket companies are growing to the point where it is no longer a family business.
Lastly, Forest concludes that in the print industry many of the same things are still happening between the aftermarket and OEMs. OEMs defend their patents from infringement with lawsuits, and the aftermarket tries to win the race to patent chips which will work with any OEM cartridge.
