Hamamatsu, Japan -- Roland DG announced October 26 the release of the first ever printer created to handle metallic silver ink, says the Wide Format On-line website. The Soljet Pro III XC-540 MT is compatible with vinyl, PET film, canvas, and transparent film and banner. It prints from a color palette of six inks, cyan, magenta, yellow, black, silver, and white. It is capable of producing a variety of colored metallic effects including gold, silver, and pearlescent colors. It can even be operated with double white ink, which allows the XC-540 MT to produce bright white color, text, and graphics.
Traditionally, the gold and silver tones could only be created using complex printing systems like offset and flexo presses among others. It has also been hard to cost-effectively produce metallic graphics to this point especially in small quantities, with printers previously relying on thermal ribbon technology where the cartridges are very expensive.
The XC-540 MT will print at a rate of 41m2 per hour at a maximum resolution of 1440 x 1440 dpi. Another advantage to this machine is the integration of both a printer and a cutter to maximize workflow. It can be operated unattended for a company’s convenience. It works best for specialist signage and short-run labels with spot colors.
