Commonly, errors on your printer are caused by a jam with media. If you are receiving an error on an HP laser printer, for example, with a number that begins with a 3 or a 13, the issue is probably a jam; try the one of the following steps to correct the problem.
If there is a paper jam (this should be indicated on the HP screen) first remove the item or media causing the jam. To be safe, remove all paper or print media from the area. Check all of the rollers and paths to be sure there is nothing stuck in any of them. Finally, open and close the cover to reset the message. If there is a paper tray, make sure it is fully closed and clicked into position. Reload the paper, being certain that you do not load the printer trays with too much paper, weight or thick stacks can interfere with the operation of the rollers or sensors in your printer.
If the problem still persists, you may need new sensors. This is especially common for printers with duplexing capability -- printers that automatically print double-sided.
Many printers will provide a location code or number, check the printer manual to find the location. Often, you can fix the problem yourself without needing to hire expensive staff. If you do not have the manual, check the manufacturer's website for an online version for the model number of your printer.
