Graph Paper

Graph Paper is a type of paper produced with pre-printed horizontal and vertical lines, creating a grid pattern. Graph paper is used predominately for mathematical, design and scientific purposes, and comes in a variety of types and styles.

Two popular styles of graph paper are Printed and Cartesian. Printed graph paper is available in loose-leaf and notebooks styles (if pre-printed at the time of purchase) as well as through the internet. Printing graph paper off the internet has the benefit of being free and can be done with any standard printer ink. With the help of software programs that produce specific styles and colors of graph paper, graph paper can be developed independently and can be printed by high quality laser toners and inkjet printers to create a professional looking product.

Cartesian on the other hand has a much thinner and rougher grid style than the Printed Graph paper. The size of the repeated sample square is measured by the size of the incremental squares and may contain darker lines that form grids within an even larger grid.

There are numerous other types and styles of graph paper. A few of which are hexagonal, isometric and polar. The variety of other styles may have heavier lines to divide particular areas of the grid, dotted grids; which are easier for young students new to educational settings to use, and diamond shaped, three-dimensional grids. These three dimensional (or axonometric) grids present more than one side of an object and is used in a wide range of projects, from jewelry and quilting, to movies and video games.
