RFID, or Radio Frequency Identification is a term referring to a tag that is applied to anything for tracking. Barcodes have traditionally been printed on packages to fulfill this role. Now, barcode printer and RFID tag technology is evolving quickly, and the industry is struggling to keep up.
Most recently, Godex has announced a new thermal transfer printer for barcodes. The thermal transfer printer is a low-cost alternative to more expensive tagging alternatives, but still takes advantages of modern technology.
A thermal transfer printer works by applying a thermal element to a ribbon and melting it to the paper, box, or other material that it is printing on. The price of the new Godex printers is from $400 to $500, which is inexpensive for the easy and industrial use of the machine.
In contrast, at the beginning of August, Lexmark introduced that they had added RFID technology to a laser printer, which they then sold for around $2500.
