Short Summary of Sean Milmo's article Interest in Security Inks Grows Due to Brand Protection, Bank Notes
Due to the current recession, brand owners can no longer afford to stand aside as counterfeiters take a share in the profit. It is now worth it to spend a little bit of money on security features rather than to lose a substantial amount more because of counterfeit goods.
Europe, in particular, has seen sales of security inks sky-rocket. Printers of bank notes have largely increased the demand of security inks because consumers have been using them more than credit cards during this recession. The majority of bank notes still use traditional holograms; however, with the aid of computer technologies, holograms are proving to be effective in brand protection. Mini-grooves on the polyester film warrant an intricate pattern that is difficult to copy but easily noticed by the human eye.
European pharmaceutical companies are being forced to invest in brand protection to prevent counterfeit drugs. Producers of inexpensive goods (such as toothpaste and chocolate) are also applying more security features because of the growing volume of counterfeiters.
It is the opinion of many that successful brand protection will lie in the combination of holograms, color shifting ink and other securities. With more variable security features, counterfeiting will become much more difficult.
