New York, NY -- The International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is back this week for its annual convention in Las Vegas, NV. Traditionally this is a place where tech companies have shown off their latest and greatest consumer-grade products which will be released that year.
2011 was a huge year for 3-D printing and at Castle Ink we spent a lot of time covering it. With that trend expecting to continue in 2012, it’s no wonder that one of the first stories to come out of CES by PC World involves this technology. If you don’t have the cash to own a 3-D printer yourself, there’s a new app for that. No, it doesn’t print you the money to buy a printer, but for as little as about $50 (or as much as $450) you can put a profile of your face on a 3-D object.
The app itself is free and currently available from the iTunes App Store. While there are not a ton of objects you can create right now, you can still create some pretty interesting things. For instance, you can put your profile image on your own iPhone case. You can do the same with mugs, and vases, too, just to name a few. Once you have taken a photo of yourself in profile, you can work with the app to customize the image, choose the object you want to print it on, and then the company, French-based Sculpteo, will print it off in ceramic and ship it to your house.
