According to an article posted October 14 on the San Francisco Chronicle website, the Wi-Fi alliance announced Wi-Fi connectivity could receive a technological boost by mid-2010. The new method, referred to as Wi-Fi direct, would allow peer-to-peer connections and eliminate the "middle man", the wireless router. Already showing support for this new technology are industry giants such as Apple and Cisco, and Intel. For consumers, their devices which are already connecting over Wi-Fi, will be able to talk to each other more easily, like Bluetooth, but with faster data transmission speeds and a larger area in which to stay connected. For instance, things like printers, TVs, cameras, computers, and other devices could connect and "talk" directly to each other. For instance, one could send documents to their printer without it having to be on the same network. There are many other possibilities imaginable as well, so we will wait and see.
