The HP DeskJet 6540 Photo Printer is a mid-range priced inkjet that offers quality performance for the home or home office. The HP DeskJet 6540 is PC and MAC compatible with a max optimized dpi of 4,800 x 1,200. The printing is pretty solid across the board, with sharp text and graphics and very good photos (of up to 8.5 x 24). The printer uses high quality HP Vivera inks in a two cartridge, four color mode (HP 94 black ink cartridge and HP 95 Tricolor ink cartridge) or replacing the black with a photo ink cartridge (HP 99 Photo Inkjet) for higher quality 6 ink color print mode. However, all these extra inks are expensive and since they aren’t individual they may be expensive in the long run. The speed is actually just as good as the printing with a swift 25 pages per minute average max for text and graphics and 5 x 7 photo on high prints at 45 seconds. While some photo card slots or a PictBridge port would have been ideal, nevertheless the Deskjet 6540 is a fast and reliable inkjet printer that’ll be a welcome addition to any home or home office.
