Epson Announces Their Participation With EPEAT
February 13, 2013
As part of their ongoing commitment to the environment, Epson announced their inclusion with the recently expanded EPEAT® for greener electronics. By expanding their coverage to include printers, scanners, copiers, and multifunction devices, they have made it easier than ever before for government agencies, businesses, and even consumers to select products that meet their expectations. For Epson, several of their multifunction and large format printers are available with this standard, and more will be added after being certified according to standards. .
To reach this EPEAT level, machines must meet or exceed at least 33 required environmental performance criteria. They were developed over a four-year period by a group consisting of representatives from environmental, research, governmental, and manufacturing sectors. Further, the evaluation is done on a lifecycle basis, and includes things such as the elimination of toxic materials, energy efficiency, the use of recycled and recyclable materials and much more. All of their standards are accessible on their website at www.epeat.net.
According to the Epson press release, over 533 million EPEAT-registered products have been bought since the original system for PCs and Displays was begun in July 2006. Canon USA also had several of its products receive EPEAT certification and reported statistics on the environmental benefits of EPEAT products.
Epson Sponsors Valentine’s Day Printing Contest
February 8, 2013
What do love and printing have in common? Well, maybe more than you might think according to Epson. Last week the OEM announced the beginning of their Epson® “Be Here, Print There” Remote Romeo Contest, which is designed to teach mobile users to “love and print responsibly”. Using Epson Connect technology, smartphone and tablet users can print to basically any compatible model from wherever they happen to be in the world (provided they have Wi-Fi/Internet access).
If you are interested in participating, simply watch Epson’s Remote Romeo and tweet Angela’s response to her “philandering boyfriend’s attempt to reconcile”. Be sure to use the Twitter hashtag #EpsonConnect and keep it clean, between Feb. 1 and Feb. 14, 2013. Epson says will have a panel of judges review each of the entries based on creativity, originality, and relevancy of responses. Winners will receive a free Epson Expression Premium XP-600 Small-in-One®.
Jeff Muto, product development manager at Epson America, Inc. says “‘Flowers and chocolate are so old school. Today’s mobile users are looking for new, real-time ways to share and show their affection, and printed photos are a perfect way to express their love from anywhere. Our relationship-based contest has some fun with this idea, and is a terrific stage for showcasing the ease and impact of printing remotely.’”
Epson Reaches Mobile Printing Milestone
Epson America earlier this week announced that an astounding 105 of their branded printers worldwide are able to support printing via Apple AirPrint. If you haven’t heard of AirPrint, it is Apple’s easy method for mobile printing of emails, photos, web pages, and documents from iOS devices like iPads, iPhones, or the iPod touch. Epson says that this support is critical to fulfilling their mission of making mobile printing both convenient and productive.
Epson?s Ian Cameron, general manager, Global Web & Communications “lsquo; Epson?s widespread support of AirPrint demonstrates our global leadership and commitment to providing customers with easy printing solutions that meet their evolving mobile business and personal lifestyle. We recognized some time ago that mobile printing wasn?t just a novel idea, it was a necessary requirement for both sharing memories and mobile productivity in a rapidly changing digital marketplace. As iPhone and iPad momentum continues to grow, Epson will continue to lead the development of various innovative mobile digital imaging solutions ’”.
The number of AirPrint-enabled models has increased drastically from last year ? the OEM says by 80% -- which gives their customers, both current and potential, a wide range of choices in printing. AirPrint capability comes native in many common iOS apps like Mac Mail, Photos, Safari, and iBooks. According to Epson, there are a wealth of other apps that users can download from the AppStore which are also compatible with this software.
Epson Launches First Mopria-Certified Printers For Home and Business
Adding onto all of the other big news they have unveiled recently, this week Epson also announced their first batch of printers to become Mopria-certified. The collection encompasses printers designed for both home and business and includes the Epson® Expression® Photo XP-860, the Epson® Expression® Premium XP-820, XP-620, XP-520, and Epson® WorkForce® WF-2660, WF-2650, and WF-2630.
With the ownership of mobile devices only growing, the need to support mobile printing also is steadily increasing. Epson points to research conducted by Gartner Research published this past June that predicts by 2018 that 5.1 billion people will have smartphones and tablets. Epson states that its mobile print efforts “are designed to embrace both the rapidly evolving demands of mobile customers and the diversity of multiple operating systems”. To that end, Epson works closely with the Mopria Alliance to advance mobile print standards for home and business users that are not dependent on brand, device, or operating system.
All of the Mopria-certified printers are fully compatible with the Mopria Print Service as well as the built-in Printing Framework included with Android v4.4 (KitKat) or later. Once printers are equipped with the latest firmware, Android users can quickly and easily print from Google apps like Chrome, Gmail, Drive, and QuickOffice (now broken into Docs, Sheets, and Slides) plus Adobe Reader and Kingsoft WPS Office App. Additionally, with Gartner predicting Android to account for 74% of the global smartphone and tablet sales in 2014, Epson is working to make printing a breeze for unparalleled number of new Android users. See the image below, courtesy of the Mopria Alliance, which explains the connections between Android and your printer.
Patrick Chen, product manager of mobile connectivity, Epson America, Inc., said based on research from Pew Internet and InfoTrends, “‘With 9 out of 10 U.S. smartphone users 16 years or older and two of five employees using smartphones on the job, the need for intuitive mobile printing options and support is apparent. Epson is proud to actively support an industry-wide movement to streamline mobile printing ease-of-use and accessibility.’”
Besides their support of the Mopria Alliance, Epson also offers the Epson Connect Solutions Finder to assist users in finding what options are available for their particular mobile device. Epson also has their Epson Connect suite of free mobile printing solutions which makes it possible for users to print documents, photos, emails, and webpages from virtually anywhere in the world with an Epson Connect-enabled printer and compatible tablet, smartphone, or computer.
