New York, NY -- As we have said many times before at Castle Ink, if you take care of your printer, it will last a lot longer. Nothing will keep your printer running forever, but this will at least help keep it running as long as it is supposed to.

For Inkjet Printers:

  • Before you do anything to the inside of your printer, make sure it is unplugged.
  • Clean off any splotches of ink first. This can be done with a cotton cloth dabbed with alcohol or water.
  • You can also use an air can to try and blow out any debris.
  • Never use a vacuum cleaner to clean out your printer.
  • Finally you can clean your ink cartridges as well by dabbing a cloth in some alcohol and gently rubbing the area where the ink dispenses.

For Laser Printers:

  • Before you do anything to the inside of your printer, make sure it is unplugged.
  • The first thing to do is to remove your toner cartridge. Any excess toner inside the machine (not on the cartridge itself) can be vacuumed out with a special “toner vacuum”. They can cost a fair bit of money, but it is a lot safer than using a regular vacuum cleaner, no matter how safe you are.
  • For the toner cartridge itself, use a toner cleaning cloth.
  • Never clean the corona wire, a thin wire that hangs in your printer, with a vacuum. Instead, clean it with a cotton swab.
