There are certainly times, especially in this era of technology, where you may be able to go without printing anything for a while. In cases such as these, before you go to print that first page, some routine maintenance is in order. Depending on how long your printing hiatus was, some of the steps outline below may not be necessary.

The first step for you is to clean the print heads. Your printer probably came with some software that will automate the process for you. Clean print heads will prevent any smudges or blank lines on your documents or graphics.

It would also be a good idea to check out the insides of your printer to make sure they are free of dust and debris. There are three places you should definitely check: the print head, the drum cartridge, and the rollers.

The last thing you want to do (especially if it’s been a while), is to go to your printer manufacturer’s web site and check for any updates to your printer drivers.
