Xerox Talks About New Tabloid-Size Printer
Yesterday Xerox’s Cheryl Otstott wrote a blog entry detailing the newest series of Xerox WorkCentre units, the 5800s, and they do look quite impressive. It should be noted at the outset that these are very high-end machines, with prices rivaling those of midsize vehicles, starting around $25,245. That s=id, likely one of the first things one will notice about the machines is their large, color touchscreen and intuitive display panel. The displays will also allow users to view support videos directly on the screen.
Otstott points out three exceptional scanning features which come standard with each of the devices: Simple Touch Scan, On-box Optical Character Recognition (OCR), and the ability to print from and scan to a USB device. The two latter options are pretty self-explanatory, but with the Single Touch Scan functionality, users can set up a single-button on the display for one-touch scanning to a pre-specified path. The scanner is designed with a dual-head so that both sides of two-sided documents can be scanned at the same time.
Probably the most unique feature of these new machines is the inclusion of Xerox’s Remote Control Panel. With Remote Control Panel, notes Otstott, an administrator can operate the machine right from their desktop PC the same as if they were standing in front of the machine. This remote access makes it easy to control and modify machine settings and train users. It alleviates the need of IT folks to have to meet users at the machine and troubleshoot the device. All the settings can be checked through the remote interface. While many of these things can be done via Xerox?s CentreWare Internet Services, the Remote Control panel provides an unprecedented level of control.
These devices also have the Xerox® ConnectKey™ Controller which we wrote about last week. The Controller further expands the capabilities of the devices, on top of the Remote Control Panel and other features. Overall, these are among the most impressive devices we have ever seen, but have a very specific audience, large workgroups.
