Printer Primer, Epson PictureMate PM-400
October 1, 2015
It has been a while since we have talked about dedicated photo printers, largely because not many companies seem to be producing them as much anymore. That said, Epson recently added to its popular PictureMate line of devices with the PictureMate PM-400 which has upgraded its functionality to come more in line with other printers being released nowadays. Admittedly, the unit will appeal to only a very specific set of users, those that enjoy printing their own photos at home who do not print documents or have another printer for that purpose. Nonetheless, the PM-400 warrants some consideration from those looking for a new dedicated photo printer.
Like all dedicated photo printers, users will find the unit to be very compact in size, and thus extremely portable should they wish to take it places. It measures 9.8” x 15.1” x 7.9” (WxDxH) when printing and weighs under 5 lbs. In terms of print speeds, a high-quality 4” x 6” photo prints from the device in about 36 seconds. If needed, users can also print photos as large as 5” x 7”. The PM-400 also offers a 2.7” LCD screen which allows users to preview and edit their photos before hitting the print button.
One area of convenience with this latest Epson unit is the multitude of wireless options which are equivalent to what users would get from any of Epson’s AIO devices. For starters, the PM-400 is compatible with standard wireless printing over the same local network as well as Wi-Fi direct printing to allow wireless devices to connect directly to each other without a wireless access point acting as intermediary. What may be surprising to some is that Epson has integrated several options for mobile users as well. The unit supports Epson Connect™ which allows users to print from virtually anywhere to the device as well as the Epson iPrint mobile app for iOS or Android devices. Outside of Epson’s own solutions, iOS users will be able to use AirPrint™ for easy printing from their Apple devices and everyone can use Google Cloud Print™ to access and print from the PM-400.
Like with most photo printers given the compact shape and size, the PictureMate PM-400 takes a single, an all-in-one ink cartridge rather than individual ones. Cartridges are rated to last for up to roughly 100 4” x 6” photos. The ink can be purchased on its own or in a combo pack with the 100 sheets of photo paper it should last for. The cartridge by itself sells for $32.99, so each print will cost you roughly 3.3 cents, which is cheaper than printing from some of the drug stores and big-box stores with photo printing services. No information is given, however, as to a suggested or maximum monthly print volume which is also pertinent.
The PictureMate PM-400 is currently available from Epson for $249.99. For more details, you can visit product page on the Epson website.
