Printer Primer, Dell S2810dn
October 5, 2015
Part of Dell’s latest printer launch which took place in late spring, the S2810dn is aimed at small workgroups and medium-sized businesses with managed IT environments. Recently we have also examined some of the other units launched at the same time, the E310w and the E515dw. Dubbed by Dell as a “Smart Printer”, it comes with plenty of features built right in and designed to keep up with the needs of its intended users. It is a single-function monochrome unit with print speeds as fast as 35 ISO ppm and first page out times of under 8 seconds (when not starting from Power Saver mode). The S2810dn is surprisingly compact at 16.14” x 17.24.” x 10.75” (WxDxH) and weighs roughly 27 lbs. A four-line LCD screen and keypad are set to front left corner to provide quick access to the unit’s secure print release functionality.
Among the strengths of the unit is most definitely the robust 1GB of internal memory. This means not only will even the most complex print jobs print without a hitch but there is plenty of room for internal file storage. With this capacity, businesses can choose to store commonly used forms and templates and print them on demand as well as easily call up other stored print jobs to queue. With this printer, while not supporting wireless connectivity, mobile users can access and print jobs via the free Dell Document Hub app. Additionally the printer works with AirPrint and Google Cloud Print when on the same network.
The Dell S2810dn is also a great solution for those companies that need simple printer management. With the Dell OpenManage™ Printer Manager (OMPM) utility, network printers can be managed and maintained. Additionally, the Dell Open Printer Driver (OPD) is designed make the deployment of printer drivers and tweaks to printer settings quick and efficient. Also included among printer management features are built-in security features including SNMPv3 encryption, IPSec, and Transport Layer Security protocols.
In terms of paper handling, the Dell S2810dn comes with two built-in trays. The main paper tray can hold up to 250 sheets of plain paper at once and the 100-sheet multipurpose tray can be used for heavier media or additional plain paper which expands capacity to 350 total sheets. Users and businesses will also appreciate the automatic, two-sided printing reducing the number of wasted pages.
As a monochrome laser printer, the Dell S2810dn uses a single black toner cartridge which is available either in a standard capacity or a high-yield one. The standard toner cartridge is rated for up to 3,000 pages while the high-capacity is rated for up to 6,000 pages. The imaging drum that comes with the printer should last for a very impressive 85,000 pages, which should provide several months of use. The recommended page volume is between 500-3,000 page each month, and a maximum duty cycle of up to 40,000 pages.
The Dell E515dw at the time of this writing is available from the company for $179.99, which is a $50 off of the standard sticker price. For more information on the unit, visit the product page on the Dell website.
