Printer Primer, HP DeskJet 2540 AIO
October 16, 2015
Recently launched, the HP DeskJet 2540 MFP warrants consideration from homes and small offices that have fairly low printing demands in need of a simple solution or replacement. It provides users 3-in-1 (print, scan, copy) functionality from a relatively compact footprint of 16.74" x 12.04" 6.17" (W x D x H), and weighs under 8 lbs. Print speeds on the unit top out at 7 ISO ppm black, and 4 ISO ppm for color output. Given it’s under $80 price point, it provides some good features for its intended audience.
It comes with a simple, multi-button interface located on the front left of the printer. One of the biggest advantages of this unit is the integration of wireless technology into its connectivity. Users can connect laptops/PCs over a standard Wi-Fi (or USB) network, but mobile devices can also by synced to the printer via Wi-Fi Direct, something that isn’t necessarily common among the less expensive printers. Additionally, with the HP Printer Control app available for iOS, Android, and Windows devices, output scan be scanned directly from the printer to mobile devices quickly and easily. Getting the printer setup wirelessly is also easy with HP Auto Wireless Connect. Lastly, for iOS users, the printer is compatible with Apple AirPrint.
Paper handling is fairly standard for these types of compact units. The input tray is located on the back of the printer and can hold up to 60 sheets of plain paper at a time. While automatic two-sided printing is not an option, the printer driver supports manual two-sided printing. As the DeskJet 2540 is designed for low-volume print environments, the maximum monthly duty cycle is 1,000 pages, though the recommended volume is between 300-400 pages.
The ink system on the DeskJet 2540 consists of two cartridges, with one black and one tri-color (cyan, magenta, and yellow combined). Both the black and the tri-color ink cartridges are available in both a standard and high-yield type. The standard yield black is rated for up to 190 pages and the tricolor for 165 pages. The high-yield XL cartridges provide up to 480 black pages, and 330 color pages.
The HP Deskjet 2540 AIO is available from the company for $79.99. For more information on the unit, visit the product page on the HP website.
