Printer Primer, Canon Color imageCLASS MF628Cw
November 24, 2015
Late last week we took a closer look at the Canon Color imageCLASS 726Cdw MFP as a possible solution for home offices and small businesses looking for a new color laser. Today we look at another unit released at the same time, the Color imageCLASS MF628Cw as a another possible fit for the same user group. Currently priced $100 lower at Amazon, the Color imageCLASS MF628Cw is also a 4-in-1 color laser allowing users to print, scan, copy, and fax from a single machine. It offers somewhat lower but still respectable print speeds of up to 14 ISO ppm for both black and color output. The device has a medium-sized footprint of 17" x 19.1" x 16.9" (W x D x H) and weighs a hefty 57.3lbs. with the cartridges installed. Like the Color imageCLASS 728Cdw, it too features a large 7-line QVGA color touch screen interface that allows for easy and intuitive navigation of machine menus and functions.
With its primary role of serving those in small offices and home offices, it is comes with lots of solid options for both wireless and mobile printing. Among the standard interfaces, users will find USB 2.0, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi for the unit. In addition to these options, users also have access for true mobile printing as well. For starters, the Color imageCLASS MF628Cw supports Wi-Fi Direct printing so that mobile devices can be connected directly to it without needing a router. While it lacks the NFC capability of the first unit, it offers built-in support for mobile services including Apple AirPrint™, Mopria™ Print Service, and Google Cloud Print. The Canon PRINT Business app is a native solution from the OEM that works on iOS and Android devices. It allows for advanced scanning and printing between mobile devices and imageCLASS units as well as cloud access to iCloud, Google Drive, and Dropbox files.
While the paper handling is certainly decent with the Color imageCLASS MF628Cw, it is not quite as robust as the MF728Cdw. It has a somewhat smaller input capacity is 150 sheet capacity main cassette and 1-sheet multipurpose tray. Unfortunately, there are no options for expanding the capacity any further, which may make it a more practical device for those with lower in-house printing needs. While there is no automatic two-sided printing either, single-sided scanning, faxing, and copying made possible through the 50-sheet capacity automatic document feeder. As with the MF726Cdw, this unit too allows for the creation and maintenance of up to 300 unique IDs for device and user management. The maximum monthly duty cycle on the Color imageCLASS MF726Cdw is 30,000 pages.
The toner system on the MF628Cw is comprised of four individual cartridges, each of which combines toner and imaging drum into one, making replacement easy and cost-effective. The black toner is available in either a standard capacity (up to 1,400 pages) or a high-yield version (up to 2,400 sheets). The color cartridges are available in standard capacity only and are rated for up to 1,500 pages each.
The Canon Color imageCLASS MF726Cdw is currently available from the company on sale for $239.40, or from Amazon with the link above for just under $250. For more information on the unit, visit the product page on the Canon website.
