Printer Primer, HP LaserJet Pro MFP M426fdw
December 10, 2015
Back in September, HP announced the debut of several new LaserJet models aimed at SMB environments. In total there were four new series of printers including the Pro M402, Color Pro M452, MFP M426 and Color MFP M477. In this segment, we are going to focus on a unit from the MFP M426 series, the M426fdw. The M426fdw is a monochrome 4-in-1 unit with the ability to print, scan, copy, and fax all from one device. It offers great print speeds of up to 40 ISO ppm along with having a compact footprint of 16.93" x 25" x 12.8" (W x D x H) and weight of 28.35lb. On the top left of the front side of the device, users will find an easy and intuitive 3.0" touch screen interface for navigating various modes and functions.
As with many of the new laser units available on the market today, it comes replete with options to get jobs printed regardless of the proximity of users to the office or to the printer. its intended audience. Among the standard interfaces for the unit are USB 2.0, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi. Another option for mobile users to connect is Wi-Fi Direct which removes the need for a router serving as an intermediary. Wi-Fi Direct is merely the start of options for accessing the unit from mobile devices. The M426fdw is compatible with HP ePrint, Apple AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, and is also Mopria-certified. To be AirPrint-able, users must connect iOS devices with the M426fdw. Connections with Google Cloud Print and Mopria should work across multiple mobile operating systems, however.
Paper handling is certainly one of the strengths of the M426fdw. Standard input capacity is divided between a 100-sheet multipurpose tray and 250-sheet drawer for handling plain paper, providing a total of 350-sheet capacity at any one time. For users needing more capacity, an additional 550-sheet tray can be purchased for $140, giving a robust capacity of 900 sheets which should certainly be sufficient for intended users. Automatic two-sided printing is another feature of the M426fdw that users will appreciate and which will allow them to save paper. Also included is a 50-sheet capacity automatic document feeder that can handle double-sided output in a single pass. Once a document has been scanned in, users have the option of sending it to a particular email address, to a network folder, to a USB drive, and even directly to the cloud. The maximum monthly duty cycle on the M426fdw is 80,000 pages, with a recommended volume between 750-4,000 pages.
As a monochrome only unit, the M426fdw takes a single black toner cartridge. The cartridge is available in either a standard or high-yield version rated for up to 3,100 pages or 9,000 pages respectfully. It should be noted that HP pre-installs a standard yield cartridge for users for added convenience. Both cartridges feature new HP JetIntelligence technology which is designed to maximize the number of pages each cartridge can produce. The new formulation of ink provides for richer and crisper black text, making output even better than with previous models.
The LaserJet Pro MFP M426fdw is currently available from the company for under $450 with special savings once the item is added to their HP shopping cart or from Amazon through the link above. For more information on the unit, visit the product page on the HP website.
