Printer Primer, HP Officejet 5741 eAIO
February 10, 2016
Released back in September among other several other units, the HP Officejet 5741 is one of HP’s newest to offer built-in compatibility with their Instant Ink program right from the get-go (more on that later). The unit offers 4-in-1 (print, scan, copy, fax) functionality in its relatively compact footprint of 17.87" x 19.80" x 7.60" while printing and weighs close to 17 lbs. Top print speeds on the device reach as high as 12 ISO ppm, and machine menus and functions are made accessible via the 2.65" touchscreen integrated front-and-center on the printer.
As part of the ePrint families of printers, the unit is built on technology that allows nearly seamless printing from mobile devices using the machine’s unique email address and simply attaching the document or photo to be printed. Users also have the option of making it a standalone printer either via USB cable (not included), Ethernet cable, or using Wi-Fi over a home network. Beyond these options, the Officejet 5741 works with Wi-Fi Direct, a technology that allows mobile devices to make a direct connection to the printer rather than needing to first connect to a local router. Additionally, there is support for AirPrint (from iOS devices only), Google Cloud Print, and solutions for virtually all major mobile operating systems including Android, iOS, Blackberry, and Windows.
The paper handling on the Officejet 5741 provides the majority of the features one would expect from a roughly $200 MFP. The standard input capacity is rated for up to 125 of plain paper in the main tray and 15 sheets of photo paper. The separate photo tray provides users the convenience of not having to switch between photo paper and plain paper while printing. Automatic two-sided printing is also a standard feature on the device, reducing waste and allowing for printing on both sides of a single sheet of paper. The ADF on the top of the device can hold up to 25 sheets of paper at once for unattended faxing, scanning, and copying. Lastly, the maximum monthly duty cycle provided by HP is up to 1000 pages each month.
As we noted above, the Officejet 5741 is designed to work with HP’s Instant Ink program that gathers data from the printer and automatically sends notifications to HP to send more ink when needed. Depending on print usage, individuals can choose between 3 different plans each month based on expected page output, a portion of which can be carried over from one month to the next. Unique about this device is that its cost includes 1 year of the program built in after signing up and receiving $120 prepaid card (which will sustain the 300 page/month plan). Users will have to provide a credit or debit card the company will keep on file to boot. At any rate, the unit’s ink system involves a single black cartridge and one tricolor (cyan, magenta, yellow) cartridge.
Currently the Officejet 5741 is available on from the company for $199.99 as well as Amazon via the link on the top left. For more information on the unit, visit the product page on the HP website.
