Printer Primer, Brother MFC-L5800DW
April 16, 2016
Announced earlier this year along with other new laser units, the Brother MFC-L5800DW is among the most advanced monochrome lasers the company has brought to market to date. Designed with offices and small workgroups in mind, the unit features 4-in-1 (print, scan, copy, fax) functionality for its users, added to its convenience and practicality. Print speeds on the MFC-L5800DW reach up to 42 ISO ppm and first page out times are under 7 seconds. Located front and center on the main panel is a 3.7" LCD touch screen which allows for seamless navigation of machine menus and functions. At 19.5" x 16.8" x 19.1" (W x D x H) it offers a relatively compact footprint to its users.
The MFC-L5800DW, as it is designed for today’s business environment, provides a whole host of options to connect and use the printer. Given its functionality and intended audience, it is not likely users would opt for USB connectivity, though it is an option. Additional network options include Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and a walk-up USB port. The true benefits of the unit are found in its bevy of mobile printing options that make it easy to print, scan, and copy from almost anywhere. Included, of course, is the native Brother iPrint&Scan which is compatible with iOS, Android, Windows, and Kindle Fire devices. Other options include full compatibility with Apple AirPrint, Google Cloud Print 2.0, Cortado Workplace, and Wi-Fi Direct, a solution that enables a peer-to-peer connection between itself and mobile devices. The unit has also been certified for mobile printing by the Mopria Alliance.
Clearly another strength of the MFC-L5800DW is its robust paper handling. It can accommodate up to 250 sheets in its main input tray at one time and can store another 50 sheets in a multipurpose tray with its default configuration. For users, workgroups, and businesses that need greater flexibility, there are optional paper trays available in either a 250-sheet capacity or 520-sheet capacity that can ultimately leave you with 1,340 sheets of total input capacity. Further improving efficiencies is a 70-sheet capacity automatic document feeder for unattended scanning, copying, and faxing. At this capacity, it is easily one of the largest we have seen on the market. The legal-sized document glass also makes it easy for users to quickly scan larger documents, as many MFPs only offer letter-sized glass. Among other standard features included with the MFC-L5800DW is automatic two-sided printing, helping save on paper waste. Mobile operations are supported by the ability of the unit to scan directly to popular cloud-based services including Evernote, Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneNote among others. The maximum monthly duty cycle is up to 50,000 pages and the recommended monthly print volume is up to 3,500 pages.
In terms of ink, as a monochrome unit the MFC-L5800DW uses a single black toner cartridge. Depending on the needs of its users, replacement cartridges come in a variety of sizes. The standard replacement cartridge yields a very respectable 3,000 pages and the high-yield equivalent cartridge a whopping 8,000 pages. The drum unit is rated for up to 30,000 1-page jobs or up to 50,000 pages with 3-page jobs.
Currently the Brother MFC-L5800DW is available for $399.99 as well as Amazon via the link on the top left. For more information on the unit, visit the product page on the Brother website.
