Printer Primer, Canon PIXMA MG6820 AIO
September 25, 2015
Another one of Canon’s latest multifunction printers that warrants some consideration is the PIXMA MG6820. It, too, was announced just last month with a slew of other Canon PIXMA units. Among them, it is pretty much in the middle of the pack in terms of features, functionality, and price. Earlier, we examined the PIXMA MG5720 which was the lowest priced new unit at under $100. Also a 3-in-1 (print, scan, copy) device, the PIXMA MG6820 has a few more bells and whistles than the MG5720. It is a bit quicker, with print speeds of up to 15.0 ISO ppm for black, 9.7 ISO ppm for color output, and can print 4” x 6” photos in roughly 41 seconds. The unit actually has the same 18.0” x 14.6.” x 5.9” (WxDxH) footprint as the other unit and weighs exactly 14.0 lbs. .
The PIXMA MG6820 features a nicely sized 3.0” touchscreen which makes it easy way to navigate machine menus and functions as well as preview photos prior to printing. The device also includes Canon’s Auto Power On feature that will power up the printer when jobs are sent, but otherwise only uses minimal energy. Users can take advantage of some of the OEM’s software with features such as built-in photo filters, photo organization tools, and even the ability to use HD movie clips taken with compatible EOS Digital SLRs, PowerShot cameras, and VIXIA camcorders and transform them into prints.
Keeping the mobile user in mind, the PIXMA MG6820 has bountiful options when it comes to wireless printing. For starters, there is built-in Wi-Fi connectivity which allows wireless printing over a local or home network from a PC/laptop. With the Canon PRINT app, users have the option to print documents directly from popular cloud services such as Google Drive, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, and more either from their smartphone and tablet or directly from the printer itself. Users can also use the app to send output from their devices to the printer. Using Apple AirPrint, it is easy to send output to the device from iPads or iPhones without the need for drivers. Lastly, with Google Cloud Print you can send output to your printer from virtually anywhere, or even share your printer with colleagues and family.
Input capacity on the PIXMA MG6820, like the MG5720 is rated for up to 100 sheets of plain paper or up to 20 sheets of photo paper. There are no additional trays available for printing on heavier media. Automatic, two-sided comes standard with the unit.
The PIXMA MG6820 has the same five-cartridge ink system as the MG5720 that contains a pigment black cartridge, and then four dye-based cartridges which includes black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. The dye-based inks are used to provide vivid, sharp photos and the pigment black is for crisp-looking documents. Each of the cartridges are available in either a standard or high-capacity cartridge, though no information on specific print yields was readily available.
The PIXMA MG6820 is currently available in either white or black from Canon for $149.99. For more details, you can visit product page on the Canon. website.
