Printer Primer, HP Officejet 5744 eAIO
November 3, 2015
Announced back in September with several other new HP printers the HP Officejet 5744 eAIO is one of the newest units in the company’s popular Officejet line of devices aimed at homes and home offices. This new unit provides 4-in-1 (print, scan, copy, fax) functionality with a reasonably compact footprint of 17.87" x 19.80" x 7.60" (W x D x H) when printing , and weighs roughly 17 lbs. Print speeds for the Officejet 5744 top out at 12.0 ISO ppm for black and up to 8.0 ISO ppm for color pages. Included in the middle of the printer is a 2.65” color touchscreen LCD which allows easy navigation of machine menus and functions.
Designed to work with mobile users, the Officejet 5740 offers a great selection of options to get print jobs from your mobile device to your HP printer. As with some of the other new HP units, it is compatible with NFC connectivity which enables users to begin printing by simply touching their supported Android-powered mobile device on the unit to connect and queue output. Additionally, there is support for Wi-Fi Direct connections, Apple AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, HP ePrint, and even printing from Amazon Kindle devices. Mobile printing in general is also supported via many smartphones or tablets powered by Windows 8, Windows RT, and even Blackberry devices. Printing over a home network can be done via Ethernet or Wi-Fi connectivity.
The paper handling on the Officejet 5744 is about average for a unit at this price point. Users can load up to 125 sheets of paper into the unit’s main tray as well as up to 15 sheets of photo paper in the dedicated photo tray. On the top of the device is a 25-sheet automatic document feeder which makes it unattended scanning, copying, and faxing simple and convenient. Automatic two-sided printing is also a standard feature on the Officejet 5744, allowing users to save on wasted paper. The maximum monthly duty cycle is 1,000 pages, though the recommended volume is between 300-400 pages.
The Officejet 5744 offers a unique proposition when it comes to ink. The unit at its core is comprised of a standard two-cartridge ink system with one black cartridge and one tri-color unit that combines the cyan, magenta, and yellow ink into one. Each is available in both a standard capacity model with 200 pages black and 165 pages for tri-color as well as high capacity version with up to 600 pages black and 415 pages for tri-color. Included with the initial purchase of the unit is the option to sign-up for HP’s Instant Ink program, with the first six months free at the 300-page level plan (normally $9.99) as well as 300 rollover pages. After the initial six-months, if desired, users can downgrade their plan to 100 pages ($4.99) or 50 pages ($2.99).
The HP Officejet 5744 eAIO is available from the company for $129.99. For more information on the unit, visit the product page on the HP website.
