Printer Primer, Dell Color Smart Multifunction Printer, H825cdw
December 8, 2015
Back in late October of this year, Dell introduced a new series of cloud connected printers aimed at small office and SMB enviroments. The H-series as its called currently consists of three units, the Color Smart Multifunction H625cdw, H825cdw, and H815dw. We will be examining each of them further in turn over a few postings. In the first segment, we looked at the H625cdw and today we turn our attention to the H825cdw. The H825cdw is very similar to the H625 as a 4-in-1 color laser allowing users to print, scan, copy, and fax from a single machine. A bit faster than the first unit, we covered, the H825cdw offers its users print speeds of up to 30 ISO ppm for both black and color output. With the increase in single-sided (simplex) print speed, users also get an increase in double-sided (duplex) print speed from 16 ISO ppm up to 19 ISO ppm, helping to establish this unit as one of the fastest we have seen in this price range. The device shares some of the same physical features of the H625cdw with its 16.9" x 19.8" x 19.7" (W x D x H) footprint, weight of 69.9 lbs, and large 4.3” color touch screen interface that allows for quick and intuitive navigation of machine menus and functions. The H825cdw also provides solid resolution of up to 300 dpi as its default, and when needed, it can provide ultra-crisp text of up to 600 dpi with its 525MHz processor and 1GB of internal RAM.
Like the H625cdw, the H825cdw offers a great set of features for its intended audience. Standard interfaces include USB 2.0, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi for the unit and additionally users have the option to connect via near field communication (NFC) connectivity as well as Wi-Fi Direct which removes the need for a router serving as an intermediary. Also among the features of note is the robust support for mobile printing via Apple AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, Mopria Print Service. While AirPrint is specific to iOS devices, both Google Cloud Print and Mopria should work across multiple mobile operating systems. Additionally, users can also take full advantage of Dell’s native solution, the Dell Document Hub app which is available on iOS, Android, and Windows mobile devices and PCs. This tool provides quick and easy access for users to files on many cloud storage services including Box®, Dropbox®, Evernote®, Google Drive™, Microsoft OneDrive®, and Microsoft SharePoint® Online among others
Paper handling is one area where the H825cdw steps it up beyond the H625cdw and accounts for some of the price difference between the two units. Standard input capacity remains the same at 300 pages including a 250-sheet main tray and 50-sheet multipurpose tray. For more capacity, users can opt to purchase an additional 550-sheet tray ($185.99), bringing total capacity to a hearty 850 pages. Users can also take advantage of the automatic two-sided printing that is built into the device to conserve paper and money on paper. On top of the device there is a 50-sheet automatic document feeder which offers the ability to scan, copy, and fax both sides of a sheet of paper in one-pass, increasing the all-around efficiency of the machine and offices using it. The maximum monthly duty cycle on the H825cdw is 50,000, which is almost 33% more than the lower priced H625cdw pages and recommended volume between 700-3500 pages which is a full 1,000 pages more at the high end as well.
The toner system on the H825cdw is the same as on the H625cdw. It is comprised of four individual toner cartridges, each of which is available in both a standard and high-yield capacity. The black toner is rated for up to 1,200 pages in standard capacity and up to 3,000 pages in high-yield. For each of the three colors (cyan, magenta, and yellow), standard capacity is also rated for 1,200 pages and high capacity is slightly more than double capacity at 2,500 pages.
The H825cdw is currently available from the company for $449.99 or from Amazon through the link above. For more information on the unit, visit the product page on the Dell website.
