Printer Primer, Canon PIXMA MG5722
December 10, 2015
We reported on the debut of the seven new PIXMA models aimed at homes and home offices when they were announced back in late August. Today we are going to take a closer look at one of the mid-range units, the PIXMA MG5722. The PIXMA MG5722 is a 3-in-1 (print, scan, copy) multifunction color inkjet with print speeds of up to 12.6 ISO ppm black and 9.0 ISO ppm for color pages. It has a compact footprint of 18.0" x 14.6" x 5.9" (W x D x H) and weighs just under 14 lbs. Roughly front and top center on the device, users will find an easy and intuitive 2.5" LCD touch screen interface for navigating the device’s modes and functions.
Most would agree there has been a shift in printing away from a PC connected by a USB cord to a standalone printer. To that end, the PIXMA MG5722 comes with an impressive set of wireless and mobile printing options. Of course, if desired, the printer does offer a hi-speed USB port which would allow the connection of it to PC/laptop. However, as with virtually all printers these days, there is no USB cable included in the box and it would have to be purchased separately. In addition to the built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, users can print from mobile devices with Apple AirPrint&trade for iOS devices; Windows RT Printing for Windows devices, or Google Cloud Print and Mopria Print Service which are not tied to a specific mobile OS or device brand as the first two are. Additionally, users can take advantage of the native Canon PRINT app (for iOS and Android devices) to connect to and print from the device.
The paper handling on the PIXMA MG5722 is pretty standard for a mid-range inkjet for homes and home offices. Standard input capacity is rated for up to 100 sheets of plain paper or up to 20 sheets of 4x6 photo paper. Automatic two-sided printing also comes standard on the device, making it easy for users to save paper. Printing can be done at a resolution of up to 4800 x 1200 dpi for color output, bringing amazing detail to every print.
The PIXMA MG5722 uses five individual inks for printing. These include the standard four colors of black, cyan, magenta, and yellow which are all dye-based inks. Additionally, there is also a pigment-based black ink that is used specifically for printing text, but is unused besides that. Each is available in both a standard and high-yield option, giving users the option to buy the cartridge that best fits their print usage and behavior.
The PIXMA MG5722 is currently available in either black or white from the company for $69.99 or from Amazon through the link above. For more information on the unit, visit the product page on the Canon website.
