HP DesignJet Printing Technology Aids Search and Rescue Operations in New Jersey

According to Mr. David Clarke, president, New Jersey Search and Rescue, "Before installing the HP DesignJet T2500 MFP, our team was limited to printing tiled maps on 8.5x11-inch paper and taping the pieces together, or just using small maps, which made it difficult for incident management staff to collaborate on scene. With the HP DesignJet T2500 MFP, we are equipped to produce large-scale maps quickly and reliably to help us optimize our search efforts and help return missing persons to their families."

Following our coverage of this story, we were granted a chance to go deeper by speaking to a representative from HP about DesignJet products and their capabilities. Responses below are from Allison Dickherber, HP DesignJet Segment Marketing Manager.
What types of software can the HP Designjet work with for printing? Is there any type of built-in or organic HP solution that companies can take advantage of?
Answer: HP DesignJet printers work with a complete suite of 3rd party software applications (CAD, GIS, Engineering such as SolidWorks, etc.) which generate files (e.g. PDF, TIFF,JPEG, .DWG) that subsequently become printed output. In addition, HP has created its own software solutions:
You mentioned the ink used in DesignJet printers during our call, what are the qualities of the ink that set it apart or make it best suited for the applications the printer is designed for (GIS)?
Answer: The HP DesignJet T2500 uses the HP 727 ink supplies. HP 727 inks have been designed to provide high print quality, high reliability, and long life for HP 727 Printheads.
Additionally, the inks are formulated to provide exceptional performance in technical and GIS applications. Pigment-based HP 727 black ink produces high density blacks for crisp text and sharp lines. Precision color-to-color alignment in the HP 727 Printhead and dye-based HP 727 color inks deliver sharp color lines and text, a wide color gamut with smooth color transitions, and fast-drying, smudge-resistant prints.
HP color scientists designed new color maps for the HP Designjet T2500 to make the best use of the color performance of HP 727 inks. Color maps translate a color specified in the input file into the amounts of ink needed to reproduce that color on a specific printing material. This translates to better color gamut and smoother color transitions in images and area fills. HP 727 inks produce superior lines and text and smooth color transitions in images, renderings, and illustrations.
How have HP DesignJet Printers evolved over the last 2-3 years?
Answer: Over the past 2-3 years HP DesignJet has seen the transition from B&W to color printing to feature or highlight various aspects of a CAD drawing, render, or presentation. Within the HP DesignJet scanning capabilities, we've seen an expansion into full functionality scanning—efficient digital archiving of historic documents as well as convenience scanning—annotation or digital archiving of real time design documents.
With today's HP DesignJet printers customers are able to drive real-time collaboration—both on screen & on paper. Scanning in particular allows design feedback to transition between a component design engineer and a manufacturing engineer or between a facilities design engineer and a HVAC, electrical, or plumbing contractor BEFORE an implementation commences. Improvements are made in both the time to deliver a successful design & the ability to deliver on the design intent in field applications.
