Printer Primer, Brother HL-L6200DW
February 19, 2016
Part of the new series of Brother printers that was announced late last month, the HL-L6200DW provides a lot of features for small and home offices while keeping costs at a point that these environments need. It is a single-function monochrome laser offering very rapid print speeds of up to 48 ISO ppm, making it one of the quickest sub-$300 lasers we have come across in our work to this point. The interface consists of a 1-lineLCD graphic located on the left of the device situated above an assortment of other buttons which can be used to toggle through machine menus and functions. Considering its capabilities, the unit is fairly compact, measuring just 14.7" x 15.3" x 11.3" in its default configuration and weighing less than 27lbs.
The HL-L6200dw provides its users several different options for connecting and printing regardless of location. For starters over a home network, users can opt for a wired Ethernet connection or use the device’s built-in Wi-Fi connectivity to free themselves from the burden of a wired connection. Beyond these basics, there are several options for true mobile printing which are compatible with the device. These include AirPrint (for iOS) compatability, Google Cloud Print 2.0, Mopria Print Service, Brother iPrint&Scan, Cortado Workplace, and Wi-Fi Direct (which allows for direct connection of mobile devices to the printer). Together all of these options provide quite an arsenal of solutions that should match up to the needs of home and small office users. .
In addition to the wireless/mobile features outlined above, one of the strengths of this unit undoubtedly is the paper handling. Right out of the box, it comes ready to handle heavy printing environments with a default input capacity of 520 sheets. This can easily be increased by adding up to 3 additional 250-sheet trays ($150 each) or two 520-sheet capacity trays ($180 each). Automatic two-sided (duplex) printing is also supported right out of the box, enabling users to lessen the amount of paper they waste. Security features that protect printing on the device include Secure Print, Secure Function Lock, Enterprise Security (802.1x), and SSL/TLS among others making sure print jobs only go to those that need to see them. The maximum monthly duty cycle on the HL-L6200dw is up to 100,000 pages each month, with a recommended volume of up to 5,000 sheets a month.
With being a monochrome laser, the HL-L6200dw requires only a single black toner cartridge for its prints. Depending on print volume and what one is willing to pay for consumables, users can opt for a standard yield toner (3,000 page) cartridge, a high yield toner (8,000 page) cartridge, or lastly a super high yield (12,000 page) cartridge. The imaging drum that comes with the unit is rated for up to 30,000 pages, so it will provide plenty of printing without any hassles.
Currently the Brother HL-L6200dw is available on from the company for $249.99 as well as Amazon via the link on the top left. For more information on the unit, visit the product page on the Brother website.
