Printer Primer, HP OfficeJet Pro 8710
April 14, 2016
Announced back in mid-March with a plethora of other printers, the HP Officejet 8710 is a solidly-featured multifunction printer aimed at those in micro and small business printing environments. Given its relatively reasonable price point, it could also make sense for home and home office printing environments that need a more robust unit. It provides convenient 4-in-1 functionality allowing users the ability to print, scan, copy, and fax from one machine. Print speeds on the Officejet 8710 top out at 22 ISO ppm for black and up to 18 ISO ppm for color, allowing users and businesses to remain efficient. It also features a 2.65” CGD touchscreen for navigating machine features and functions. The footprint of the device ranges slightly depending on whether it is set up for letter (19.7" W x 20.9" D x 13.4" H) or legal-sized output (19.7" W x 25.2" D x 12.5" H), but overall it is as compact as possible given its function and design.
Certainly among the strengths of this new unit is the assortment of wired, wireless, and mobile connectivity options available to users. It can be setup as a standalone unit and connected to a desktop or laptop with a USB cable, but equally easy is to opt for either an Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection on a home or small office network. Beyond simply connecting to the printer over a network with a computer, users with compatible wireless devices can also connect directly to the unit via Wi-Fi Direct, which does not require a router to act as the intermediary. The Officejet 8710 also works with HP ePrint, Apple AirPrint, and Android OS Enablement Printing in addition to its Mopria™ certification.
As the Officejet 8710 is designed with small office environments in mind, it comes with a robust assortment of paper handling features designed to keep businesses and users printing. The standard input capacity sits at 250 pages, which should be adequate for the intended audience for this AIO. Additionally, the unit has a 50-sheet automatic document feeder that provides the ability for users to scan digital files directly to email, network folders, and preloaded business apps like Dropbox and Google Drive among others. Automatic two-sided printing is also a standard feature of this unit, helping save on paper waste. The maximum monthly duty cycle is up to 30,000 pages and the recommended monthly print volume is between 250 to 1,500 pages.
In terms of ink, the Officejet 8710 AIO uses a standard four individual ink cartridge design with a space for one black, cyan, magenta, and yellow, thereby allowing users to only replace the cartridge that is out, rather than a whole tri-color combined cartridge. When it comes to replacing the ink, users have the option of replacing the cartridges with either a standard or a a high-yield cartridge. Each of the standard cartridges provide 1,000 black pages and up to 700 pages for each color while the high-yield XL models are rated for up to 2,000 black pages and 1,600 pages for each color. Alternately, the Officejet unit works with the HP Instant Ink program which allows users to choose a plan on an estimated number of printed pages for a set fee as opposed to shopping for cartridges only when you have exhausted all of your ink.
Currently the HP Officejet 8710 AIO is available for $199.99 as well as Amazon via the link on the top left. For more information on the unit, visit the product page on the HP website.
